About the Leprechaun trilogy
The Leprechaun Adventure books introduce young children (4+ years) to our approach of building and fostering a love for words. We refer to this process as Building Word Awareness.
In these stories we begin the process by developing phonological awareness. In addition, children are introduced to letters, numbers, colours and shapes in a fun and entertaining way.
Book 1 – Grandpa’s Daft Dream concentrates on letters of the alphabet.
Book 2 – Lucky’s Amazing Discovery concentrates on numbers and colours.
Book 3 – Murky’s Great Rise and Fall concentrates on shapes and counting.
The adventures of Hucky, Lucky, Sunny and Murky build awareness of the sound structure of words. As the stories are told children are introduced to the following:
- Rhyme – ‘Lucky put on his coat of red with a matching hat upon his head.’
- Words that start with the same sound (Alliteration) – ‘ …. Murky will no longer be mean to me.’
- Moral themes are also introduced throughout the stories. This fosters understanding of the benefits of helping each other and working together to get things done.
Make & Play Games
These easy to make board games are ideal for group and family activities. The games reinforce the themes introduced in the trilogy series.
Through playing the games children learn social skills such as sitting and waiting to take one’s turn, following instructions and learning to accept that they did not win the game this time.
In addition, visual memory skills are also developing as players try to remember where other children have placed the different numbers, shapes and so on.
For older children in senior rooms the process of making a board game from limited and recycled sources strengthens their creative instincts. The process also introduces them to environmental issues and the importance of reducing our carbon footprints.
